Story

The wine
Our Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is one of the main estates of the Appellation and one of the oldest, dating from 1748. The domaine covers around 100 ha, spread over the 3 typical terroirs. All 13 grape varieties are cultivated on our lands.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Quiot family bought an old Lazaret (a hospice run by religious Lazarists who play a very important part at the time of the 1720 plague, when a third of the villages population died) and built up a proper domaine by linking up parcels of land owned on the commune. The « Domaine du Vieux Lazaret », built up over three centuries, by marriage, purchase and distribution, has this name since 1915.

Location
Our plots are spread all around the village, which allows us to benefit of the advantages the Appellation area can offer in terms of climatological varieties, terroirs and exposure. All 13 traditional allowed grape varieties are cultivated on our lands. This allows us balanced wines, all in finesse.
Terroir
3 major soil types : soils with rolled pebbles, stony terraces with sand and gravel sub-soils and clay soils formed from the limestone mother rock.
In the vineyard
Our work as a winegrower, but above all as a farmer, requires us to ally ourselves with nature and to adapt to it. Depending on the year, this can be more or less difficult regarding the weather conditions. However, we must, through our cultivation practices, allow the plant to give us the optimum over time and to preserve our terroirs.
Vinification
Virtually total de-stemming, pumping over twice a day. Vatting time : 2 to 3 weeks in concrete vats. Matured for 18 months in vats and barrel (15%).
Varietals
Grenache noir
Syrah
Mourvèdre
Cinsault
Counoise
Muscardin
vaccarèse
Terret noir

"Vintage 2015 - 89/90 POINTS - The nose is fruity and offers a slight minerality. It reveals notes of blackberry a,d crushed raspberry associated with small touches of blue fruits as well as a discreet hint of violets and spices. The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers a good definition, a slight juicy / acidulous frame, suavity, elegance, a good freshness as well as a fine and very slightly tight grain. On the palate the wine expresses notes of juicy blackberry, crushed raspberry and small notes of crushed cassis combined with slight touches of fleshy strawberry, Zan, discreet hints of liquorice as well as an imperceptible hint of fresh almond and toasted. Good length. Fine chew on the finish. Tannins are fine and well-built." [+]

"Vintage 2013: USA The 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine du Vieux Lazaret should be a good, yet not ground-breaking effort. Dark fruits, leather, licorice and herbal notes ail give way to a medium-bodied, traditionally styled effort that’s best drunk over the coming 5-7 years." [+]

"VINTAGE 2012 - CANADA
With a traditional feel, this wonderfully complex, fleshy and slightly lactic southern Rhone blend offers a great deal of bang for your buck. A deal at less than twice the price of a standard format bottle.
Generous and with traditional charm from the reliable and well-established Chateau Lazaret. A compelling, slightly lactic note offers a dimension of complexity. The palate is a little less full and fleshy, in an appealing way, than the norm but exhibits good complexity and balance. Barrique notes of lavender and licorice linger on the very long finish.

"VINTAGE 2012 - CANADA:
Still very youthful and closed (tasted from magnum), I like the succulence and juiciness, the roasted dark fruit character and the spice here in Vieux Lazaret's 2012 Châteauneuf. Ultimately, the density and concentration are merely good, not exceptional, but this remains balanced and highly drinkable. I'd say another 2-3 years should see this fully resolve.

"SWEDEN: vintage 2012 - Lazaret is French for quarantine and the property has philanthropic tradition. But the name can equally stand for the wine should be stored for future enjoyment. The smell is massively complex and extremely origin typical marked by alcohol and layers of fruit flavors and herbs. The taste is meaty and has a long, pleasurable length." [+]

"Domaine de Vieux Lazaret is owned by the family Quiot, who has lived in the town of Châteauneuf du Pape for about 300 years. All the best parcels are - down to 1m depth - covered in potato-sized, round rocks that are terrible to work in. A shovel or chop does not last long in those fields. But all these round, bright stones are of great importance to the grapes. During the day, they reflect the sun's rays so that the grapes also get light from below, and at night they act like warmths that give off all the heat they have sucked in today's race. One of the secrets of the production of red Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a very long fermentation where shells and grains are in contact with the must for up to 21 days. Twice a day, the aunt is pumped over the shells to extract as many flavors, color and tannins as possible. The temperature during fermentation is kept at 30 degrees, which is checked automatically. After the fermentation, the wine is tested by the authorities. The last flavor component is derived from farm storage for several months on brand new oak barrels from central France.
All the wines are bottled on the special bottles of flax. These bottles may only be used by wine-growers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, who tap their wines on the property. Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge has a deep crimson color and an aroma of mature dark berries and spices. The taste is soft and persistent with good filling.

"(ENGLISH VERSION) - For ten generations since 1748, that is, for more than 260 years and before the French Revolution, the Quiot family has grown wine in Châteauneuf du Pape. The still family-owned Vignobles Jérôme Quiot, currently led by Florence Quiot, is in the heart of Châteauneuf du Pape. There, they own the two vineyards Domaine du Vieux Lazaret and Domaine Duclaux. (Since 1999, Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been available in Systembolaget's regular assortment both as a whole and a half bottle and now the wine is also available on magnum's bottle). A total of 13 grapes are included in the wine, which is dominated by Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache Noir. The grapes, which grow in three different soils - clay, sand and stone - are stripped, pressed and then fermented on cement tanks for 2-3 weeks with "pumping over" twice a day. Then the wine is stored on cement tanks and large oak barrels, so-called "Foudres", for 18 months. The name "Vieux Lazaret" originates from the 17th century. There was, then, in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a "Lazaret", that is, a monastery town run by monks (Lazarister) who received old, poor and sick people in connection with the plague ravages of the 1620s. Lazaristder was founded in 1625 by Saint Vincent de Paul to preach the gospel to the poor and to mission and help the sick.

"foudres", i 18 månader.

"vintage 2010: Deep, vivid ruby. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of cherry, black raspberry, lavender and white pepper, with a bright mineral topnote. Spicy and incisive, with juicy red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors that show an open-knit character. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spice- and floral-accented finish. Unlike most 2010 Chateauneufs this fruit-driven wine is surprisingly accessible" [+]

The Vieux Lazaret 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits slightly fresher acids as well as a more delineated style. Notes of truffles, blackberries, cassis and kirsch are present in this 2010 along with sweet tannin, excellent vibrancy and a heady finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.

"This is an engaging and complex Chateauneuf at a decent price compared to others from this famous region. It has a generous sweet nose of plums, violets, earth and licorice, with hints of graphite and anise that really bring it home to the southern Rhone. It's medium-full bodied, fairly dense and warm with considerable alcohol, but also some sourness. The length is excellent to outstanding. Some minerality on the finish. Tasted December 2012." [+]
